THE VICTORIAN PUB
After climbing the stairs enter this Victorian
bar room and rest awhile on the horsehair seat.
Look around and imagine the delights of sampling
'Bros Whisky' or Robertson Sanderson Original
Mountain Dew as advertised on the mirror over the
fireplace.
In front is the bar, complete with beer engine,
though customers could be served ale straight from
wooden beer barrels, standing on the gantry in the
corner. Behind the bar is an empty assortment of
jars and bottles from Pickering's past brewing
trade such as the Coverdale White Swan Brewery and
from their clients Stericker's Wine Merchants,
Monkman Wine Merchants, J. & E. Windle and
others.
Other objects well used in the pub of the day
were the beetle trap, cast iron bar table and the
spittoons. Overhead, a lamp globe carries the name
'Station Hotel' a well know local hostelry.
Old patrons might have wanted to indulge in a
game of Nine Men's Morris, or Merrills,
subsequently returning the board to its place
behind the bar.
