THE VICTORIAN PARLOUR
This is intended to give some idea of the
display of pictures and ornaments so loved by the
Victorians and brings together many objects from
the life of that period. There is a small table
with a fine example of beadwork tray, whilst on the
wall and shelves above there are many typical
'Bric-A-Brac' and memorial items.
The cabinet between the windows houses
gentlemen's moustache cups and a much mended but
unusual tuned stone plate.
In the window recess is an aspidistra, that
symbol of Victorian respectability.
Occupying pride of place over the mantelpiece is
an embroidered after-hunt scene copied from a
painting, 365 hours work at one hour per day, we
are told.
Two glass fly catchers also stand on the
mantelpiece whilst, next to the fire, sits the lady
of the house enjoying her afternoon tea. The
massive wall case displays examples of china and
potteryware.
Many of the pictures round the walls notably the
samplers, oil paintings on porcelain and the Berlin
woolwork are examples of ladies activities of the
period.
