THE COBBLERS SHOP
On the wall at the side of the bench is a bill
dated 1885, which originated from the Cobblers Shop
in Burgate - Pickering, near the church.
A boot jack for pulling off tall riding boots
stands near the display of shoes, boots and
leggings.
Childrens shoes and boots dating from about 1900
are in a glass case. One of the oldest exhibits is
the postillion's boot heavily reinforced to give
protection whilst guiding the carriage horses by
riding on one of the leading pair.
The various long handled knives used in clog
making, also a clog makers last hammer.
A most useful piece of equipment was the
cobblers snobbing bag shaped like an apron with
capacious pocket for holding tools. The term snob
was frequently applied to the Cobbler.
The small scales were used for weighing leather,
and prices were fixed accordingly.
