The Territorials leave Pickering in
1914. They assembled in Pickering Market
Place, outside Coverdales shoe shop, then
marched to the railway station. Assembled
to see them off are friends, relations and
loved ones, all in sombre mood, with no
cheering or flag waving. By the end of
1916 no fewer than twenty-five of these
Territorials had been killed in action.
