Wartime Picture 1

Pickering Territorials are seen relaxing in the Avenue Field close to the castle, before leaving on 6 August 1914 to take their place in the First World War. Hundreds of people assembled as they marched to the railway station, under the command of Lt W. Vause and Sgt Instructor F.C. Sherwood, to join the battalion in Scarborough. Picture By: Sidney Smith

Wartime Picture 2

The Territorials leave Pickering in 1914. They assembled in Pickering Market Place, outside Coverdales shoe shop, then marched to the railway station. Assembled to see them off are friends, relations and loved ones, all in sombre mood, with no cheering or flag waving. By the end of 1916 no fewer than twenty-five of these Territorials had been killed in action. Picture By: Sidney Smith

Wartime Picture 3

The troops line up on the platform of Pickering Station, ready to embark on their journey. They are being given a send-off by the Boy Scouts and a group of subdued locals. Sadly seventy-four men failed to return to the town after the Second World War was over. Picture By: Sidney Smith

Wartime Picture 4

Mrs Norah Kirk, wife of Dr J.L. Kirk (founder of the Castle Museum in York) is seen with hat and coat, sitting in the middle of a group of wounded soldiers during the First World War, at One Oak, Hallgarth. The house was established as a Red Cross Hospital in April 1915 and was still open in 1919. Mrs Kirk was the matron. The premises continued in use, as a doctor's surgery until a new surgery opened on the Ropery in the 1970s. Picture By: Sidney Smith

Wartime Picture 6

Pickering Home Defence Corps, July 1915. The forerunners of the Home Guard are seen marching over the railway crossing in Bridge Street. On the left is the signal box and behind is the Temperance Hall (now Beckside Crafts). The band marching in front would be either Skaife's Band or Smith's Band, as the town had two active bands at the time. Picture By: Sidney Smith

Wartime Picture 7

The Home Defence Corps on parade at the bottom of the Market Place. In the background are Milburns shoe shop, Dr Murphy's house and the Scarborough and Whitby Brewery off-licence (now Boaks ice cream shop). Picture By: Sidney Smith
